Scottish Government Study into Short-Term Letting

The Scottish Government is carrying out a study into the supply and demand for short-term letting in Scotland.

The briefing note states:
“Scottish Ministers have recently signalled that they wish to set up an independent expert panel to advise them on the opportunities that the collaborative economy brings as well as the challenges that it will present.  One of the key sectors within the collaborative economy, which connects individuals or communities via online platforms, thereby enabling the sharing or provision of goods and services, assets and resources without the need for ownership, is peer to peer accommodation.
Scottish Government have also been receiving an increasing volume of correspondence about the effects short-terms lets are having on the housing market in Scotland. To help understand the drivers behind this and gather comparative data about the multiple sources short-terms lets are being marketed through they have commissioned specialist housing consultants to provide them with scoping research.  This research will help inform the expert panel on whether collaborative platforms are affecting Scotland’s housing market in comparison to traditional models.”

Scottish self-catering worth £723.3 million per annum!

The Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers is delighted to publish a major study, which measures the Economic Impact of the Self-Catering sector in Scotland.

The evaluation, carried out by Frontline Consultants, reveals the economic impact of all visits made to self-catering providers in Scotland, and provides an area by area breakdown of this expenditure. It:

  • assesses expenditure by property-owners and managers, and visitors in the local economy;
  • provides an independent, evidence-based, understanding of the direct and indirect economic impact/contribution of the self-catering sector in Scotland;
  • assesses the full-time equivalent jobs supported by the sector.

The study indicates that there are 16,949 self-catering holiday let properties in Scotland. The self-catering sector represents 3.4million visitor nights per year (1.8million non-Scottish visitors). There is an annual £723.3 million direct visitor spend (£470.1 million from non-Scottish visitors) and Scottish self-catering supports 10,725 direct FTE jobs.

The findings provide evidence of the value of the self-catering sector to the Scottish economy and heightens the recognition of the sector as an essential part of the tourism mix and economic growth.
