ASSC Welcomes New Communications and Administration Assistant

Communications and Administration Assistant

We are delighted to introduce you to Melanie Allen, our new Communications and Administration Assistant. We are thrilled that she has joined the team and believe she will be a real asset to the Association.

Melanie says “I am delighted to join ASSC and I am very excited to be working with Fiona, Eleanor and the Board in delivering the vision and objectives of the organisation.

I am looking forward to supporting you as Members and being a part of the very important role the ASSC has established within the industry.

I believe that Scottish Tourism is a world leader in providing visitors with very unique, authentic and special experiences and I consider ASSC & EmbraceScotland to be one of the leading lights in this sector.

Currently, I am fulfilling an ambition having moved to Scotland some 18 months ago with my husband; we are renovating several properties on a small estate in Dumfries and Galloway.   Although the business is not yet up and running, I decided to become a Member of ASSC. This decision was so important, as it enabled me to really get to grips with the industry, research current legislation and keep up to date with relevant news and events.

Membership benefits provide a valuable resource especially whilst preparing to renovate our holiday cottages.  The ASSC Website is such a useful tool, with the guidance sheets being of particular help to me along with the links to key trade suppliers.  Having the support of ASSC Membership will help me to make well measured decisions throughout business planning and execution.

I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone at this year’s ASSC 40th Anniversary Conference.”

Energy Performance Certificates – Latest Developments

Energy Performance Certificates – Latest Developments

The Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) continues to press the Scottish Government on the issue of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).

The ASSC has produced a briefing paper on the introduction of EPCs in Scotland and also it also sets out the main points of clarification required from the Scottish Government relating to their interpretation of relevant EU Directives and their application in terms of energy performance. This has been shared with the Scottish Government’s Building Standards Team.

The ASSC has requested urgent clarification on the following issues:

  1. What is the Scottish Government’s interpretation of the term ‘rented out’ and the scope of that term within Article 7 of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)?
  2. Are self-contained units considered domestic/residential or non-domestic/commercial?
  3. What were the concerns associated with the withdrawal of the guidance in 2012 and what was the legal advice that led to the withdrawal of guidance, as per points above?
  4. Is the action of this regulation proportionate to the concerns raised, and in line with other EU countries interpretation of the Energy Performance of BuildingsDirective?
  5. Will the Scottish Government introduce a clear and transparent policy and ensure that there is adequate guidance on the criteria that apply?
